i-mate JAM
REVIEW DATE: 21-JUN-2005
A gem in both scale and value, the i-mate JAM ($640 street, as low as $540 with contract) is the world’s smallest Pocket PC PDA/phone. It’s also the only Pocket PC phone that feels truly comfortable in the hand, making it a good (if expensive) choice for folks who desire a phone that runs Microsoft’s OS. Its lack of high-speed networking, though, makes it a poor choice for those who also need on-the-run Internet access.
At 5.4 ounces and only 4.5 by 2.3 by 0.7 inches (HWD), the aluminum-clad i-mate JAM is svelte. A particular design and engineering choice we approve of is the unit’s use of a four-way rocker in place of the usual overabundance of Pocket PC buttons. I ended my previous article (Linux on the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet) by saying that the release of the OS 2006 prepared the way for some serious VOIP work. The 770 can now make SIP-based VOIP phone calls and is more like what you’d expect from Nokia–a phone!

Samsung Electronics said Thursday it has developed a 60 GB 1.8-inch hard disc drive and will start mass-producing it early next year.
Smaller than a business card, the drive is capable of storing 40 DVD movies and 15,000 MP3 music files. It will be used for mini PCs, small notebook computers, portable multimedia players and MP3 players.
By mass-producing the drives, Samsung hopes to consolidate its lead in the mobile device market. Japan¡¯s Toshiba and Hitachi are leaders in the 1.8-inch hard disc drive market.

Sony Ericsson has unveiled its first 3G phone capable of supporting i-mode, the internet-on-your-phone service pioneered by Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo and offered over here in the UK by the O2 network.
The K610im is a classic Sony Ericsson handset design - it’s cased in black and there’s a landscape-oriented two-megapixel, 2.5x digital zoom camera on the back. The addition of 3G support includes an extra, front-mounted camera for video calls. The screen is a 1.9in, 176 x 220, 262,144-colour job
The handset has 16MB of user-accessible memory on board, expandable using MemoryStick Micro cards - there’s a 64MB card in the box, Sony Ericsson said. There’s all the usual media playback - it supports over-the-air downloads, along with OMA and i-mode DRM technologies. It offers the full range of phone messaging facilities, in addition to the extra mail and messaging tools i-mode offers.
In addition to 3G, the phone operates as a tri-band GSM/GPRS device. Bluetooth is on board too.
Sony Ericsson said the K610im will ship in “i-mode markets” in Europe, Asia and the Middle East in Q3. It did not say which, if any, i-mode carriers will offer the handset. ®
